Step 1: Take a look at your surroundings.
The seaside is awfully lovely and all, but it doesn't make for the most awe-inspiring photos. Blue sky, blue sea and yellow sand makes for an instantly-forgettable photo.

The trick to nice beach shots is the detail. A shoe, some stones, a fish and chip wrapper – something out of the ordinary to focus on will bring even a bland beach shot to life

Step 2: don't put the horizon dead centre
Watch the rules of composition film – you're violating the Rule of Thirds, which is a big no-no among photography boffins.

Slicing a photo in half is disconcerting for the viewer. It looks especially horrid.

Step 3: Framing
Look around you. Are there any rocks or trees or anything you can use to add a natural frame to the picture? If so, use them.

Step 4: Unique Angles
Don't just shoot straight on, mix it up a bit. Something kooky and funky and interesting.

Step 5: Colour
Blue, more blue, perhaps some yellow: beaches aren't the most imaginative places, colour-wise. So capitalise on any splashes of colour. Vibrant colours will really stand out, and make your photo look doubly ace.

Step 6: Sunrise/ Sunset
When the sun's riding high might be a nice time for sunbathing, but it'll take a rotten picture. The sky's so much more interesting at sunrise or sunset, so use that to your advantage. The sun resting on the horizon looks brilliant, and you can't really fail to take a decent snap at these times.

Step 7: if there's no sunshine
Oh dear. It's a rubbishy holiday with no sun. So try shooting in black and white, or flip it to black and white in Photoshop when you get home. That'll cover the overcast, cloudy, rubbishy sky and make things look a whole lot more interesting.

What's more, rotten days often make for brilliant beach shots; there's no one else about and things look windswept and dramatic. Give it a try.

Step 8: Portraits
Photos of people are a nightmare – on a sunny day they'll be bleached out and squinting. It'll look rubbish.

Wait for some cloud to come over – it'll soften the light on their face and stop them squinting. You can also use cover like trees or umbrellas in the same way.
